I have a workshop that has all kinds of wood working equipment in it. My favorite piece has always been my scroll saw. I had a Craftsman scroll saw that I had bought when I was around 20. I recently sold it because I upgraded to an Excalibur scroll saw, which I must say is awesome. I remember when I was in middle/ high school, Mom’s class would work with a wood lathe but I never tried it. It really hasn’t hit me as something I would want to do. Jason became friends with a man who have turned wood for over 50 years and he peaked Jason’s curiosity. We made an appointment at Jason’s friend’s workshop. He would then show us the basics on what we would need to know to turn objects such as bowls, ornaments (which is what I want to do), and he even showed me how to make mini barrels! And of course, spinning tops.
Well…..today, we drove over an hour away to Woodcraft and looked at lathes. Now, Jason shops like a female but asks many more questions. He is very thorough when researching things. Mom and I walked around the store about 3 times. He walked around the store about 10 times, if not more (not joking). He even called our “turning mentor” to ask him questions on what to purchase and what not to purchase. I honestly thought we would never get out of that store. Now, don’t get me wrong….. I love the fact that Jason is taking an interest in woodworking. It makes me really happy in knowing that maybe we might have something in common except for our love of cheese and politics. He actually did more practicing than I did. He is the one who actually turned most of the bowl on the front image. So, we are now the proud new owners of a JET lathe. There will hopefully be many posts about the things I make on it.
Until next time,
